Nurse Practitioner
Virginia Beach Hampton Roads VA
A Nurse Practitioner has completed
additional schooling beyond the Bachelor of Science
in Nursing with a concentration in a specific area
such as pediatrics, geriatrics, neonatology, family
practice or women’s health. Education for
nurse practitioners includes years of advanced nursing
and selected medical studies as well as intensive
clinical experience in the area of specialization.
The WHNP candidate must pass the board examination
to obtain national certification and can obtain
prescriptive authority to order medications in most
states. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, nurse practitioners
are governed under rules and regulations developed
by the State Boards of Medicine and Nursing. Many
WHNPs elect to continue school and complete a master’s
degree, often in science, which is denoted in the
title as “MS” or “MSN” (Master
of Science in Nursing).
The nurse practitioner provides much of the same
care as a doctor, maintaining a close collaborative
relationship with the supervising physician and
referring as needed. Because of their training as
nurses, WHNPs approach women with compassion and
are able to empathetically listen and understand
their concerns. The nurse practitioner’s sensitivity
to the patient’s needs and ability to decrease
the mystery surrounding health care not only make
nurse practitioners skilled clinicians, but also
able patient educators.
Heather Hallberg, RNC, WHNP, MS is a graduate
of Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth
University where she graduated with Honors for her
Bachelor and Master of Science in nursing. She is
certified in the area of women's health by the National
Certification Corporation and licensed as a Women's
Health Nurse Practitioner. She is also a graduate
of Loyola University in Chicago where she earned
her bachelor degree in psychology and biology. Prior
to joining our practice, Heather cared for patients
and their families in our community who were coping
with surgery and cancer. Heather enjoys caring for
women of all ages, and in collaboration with the
practice philosophy, values women for their experiences
as well attending their gynecological concerns.

We think childbirth is an amazing experience, no
matter how your newborn arrives into the world. One of the best ways for
moms-to-be to prepare for their own births is to hear positive stories from the real
experts: other moms.
