Medications You Can Take

Dr. Richard Valentine OBGYN Medical Practice
We usually advise you to avoid taking any medications, especially during the first trimester. However, if a healthcare provider who is aware you are pregnant prescribes medication for you at any time, we find it in your best interest to take it without delay. Call the prescriber immediately if you have questions about your medication. The following is a list of over-the-counter medications and therapies that you can use starting in the second trimester (13th week). Items listed for nausea/vomiting can be safely used from the very beginning of your pregnancy.





Nausea/Vomiting

Teas: chamomile, peppermint, ginger, peppermint-ginger, raspberry leaf Essential oil aromatherapy: lemon, mint, ginger or any pleasing combination
Extra Vitamin B6 Sips of canned peach syrup
Ginger capsules Sea Bands
Papaya enzyme Emetrol
Carob Morning Sickness Magic

Constipation

8 – 10 glasses of water/ day Exercise
Prune juice Dark green leafy vegetables
Colace Senokot
Fibercon Flax seed
Metamucil Milk of magnesia

Indigestion/ Heartburn/ Upset Stomach

Well-chewed hazelnuts Ginger capsules or tea
Papaya enzyme Maalox/ Mylanta
Tums/ Rolaids (limit 6/ day) Gas X/ Milicon
Zantac 75 (up to 4 tabs/ day)  

Headache

8 – 10 glasses of water/ day Essential oil Lavender – apply to temples or other site of pain
Tylenol regular or extra strength Avoid stimulants: chocolate, coffee, caffeinated tea, cigarettes (always)

Hemorrhoids

8 – 10 glasses of water/ day Avoid straining to have a bowel movement
Warm Sitz bath Anusol/ Preparation H
Tucks/ Witch hazel pads  

Insomnia

Essential oil Lavender in bath, to temples or wrists Sleepy Time Tea
Tylenol PM/ Benadryl Calcium/Magnesium Supplement

Cold Symptoms
– Always increase your fluid intake!
Congestion/ Stuffy Nose
Saline nasal spray/ drops Benadryl
Tylenol Sinus/ Cold Sudafed/ Actifed
Vicks Vapor Rub Robitussin/ Triaminic
Chlor-Trimeton Neosynephrine Spray
Cough
Robitussin plain Robitussin DM
Naldecon Senior DX Triaminic
Sore Throat
Salt water gargle Any throat lozenges

Yeast Infections

Avoid high-carbohydrate diet Eat yogurt with active cultures
Do not douche At-home methods (Scroll down this page)
Monistat or any over-the-counter yeast treatment with active ingredient ending in “-azole”
Use 3-day or longer formula

Diarrhea

Imodium AD
